Hello, my name is Tyson Smith (he,him) and I am a Peer Wellness advocate at Mind-Plus. My Mental health Journey began in my formative years, I know what it is like to run away from yourself, My running lead me overseas, previously I worked as an electrician in Western Australia, in a fly in fly out role. I faced many challenges during that time, however after a few years working in a remote isolated industry with a strong masculine culture and a definite tendency to self-medicate (drugs and alcohol), I started to develop severe mental health issues.
I eventually woke up in the psychiatric ward at the Royal Perth Hospital.I lost everything, but in the process also found myself.
I have since had an experience with borderline personality disorder and dysthymia, I found myself living in a residential facility that lacked any kindness or compassion for me as a person. After fighting the health system, I found myself surrounded by a supportive team and started my journey of recovery. I completed training and took that brave first step across the office and sat on the other side of the table; I am now employed Mindplus in a fulltime Role as a Wellness Advocate. At MindPlus I help to empower people that have an experience with mental illness and assist them to become the best version of themselves.
At university I decided to pursue psychology and philosophy papers as I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of people and the motivations behind behaviour. I grew up in Waimārama, where I whakapapa back too, and much of my family live. I enjoy spending time with my loved ones and creating memories that we can look back on and laugh about, I enjoy spending time outdoors, improving my archery/loosing arrows, and building rockets. I am excited about making positive changes in the world and am always looking for new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow as an individual.
I am a student, a brother, a son, a colleague, and a survivor.
